Space is the opening track from the 2001 James album Pleased To Meet You.
It was not performed live during the Autumn 2000 tour when most of the new album was previewed. There are a couple of alternative versions of the song on early promos of the album, which mainly consist of a different opening section with more acoustic guitar.
A live version of the song appears on the 2002 Getting Away With It Live cd and dvd.
The song featured extensively on the 2011 orchestra tour and remained a regular in the set in 2012 and 2013. It reappeared at orchestral dates in 2023.

Break my shape - in light I trust
None exist save space and dust
None exist, just lights in time
Space divides the borderline
The borderline
Space between and space inside
My four walls my shape defines
Space defines
You've gotta get over yourself
You've got to get out of the frame
Gotta learn to see yourself a total stranger
You've got to get out of the frame
Give yourself a brand name
Gotta learn to see yourself a total stranger
It's a shock to my system
To wind up back where I have come from
It's a crime in my child's eyes
To find out life is in my mind
You've gotta get over yourself
You've got to get out of the frame
Gotta learn to see yourself a total stranger
You've got to get out of the frame
Give yourself a brand name
Gotta learn to see yourself a total stranger
It's a shock to my system
To wind up back where I have come from
It's a crime to my child's eyes
To find out life's disguise
Oh no
All gone
All gone
Nothing to hold me down
No
All gone
I'm gone
Nothing to hold me down
No
All gone
I'm gone
Nothing to hold me down
No
I'm gone
I'm gone
Nothing to hold me down
Calling, calling
Calling you to see through me
Calling, calling
Calling you to see through me
Calling
Calling

(Note: 8 etc. means play the note and then tail it off down the fretboard. Listen closesly to the record and you'll hear what I mean.)
(~ = vibrato)
Song Structure:
The song starts with swirling keyboards and Tim singing, but no guitars. The impression I get is that the chords are Dm Bb F C, but the Tim's singing and the keyboards only loosley define the chords.
When the guitars kick in two play different inversions of the chords (one high one low) in a kind of "stabby" manner, and another plays Main Riff 1. This guitar then plays Main Riff 2 over the "you've got to get over yourself" bits, dropping out for the first "it's a shock" bit. During the second "it's a shock" bit it plays what sounds like a not-so-loud version of the solo.
Then comes the solo, detailed above. After this in the "Calling" bits a guitar plays some very hard-to-tab riffs, the majority of which sound a lot like the "Sort Of" Riff, which is sort of a riff (hence the name). Basically single notes with a hell of a lot of pitch bending.
