The Shining is track six on the 2001 James album Pleased To Meet You. A Live At Ridge Farm version also appears on the b-side to the Getting Away With It (All Messed Up) single.
It was previewed on the Autumn 2000 tour. Tim Booth ponders sailing uncharted oceans and breaking through or being broken, and there being a fine line between success and failure and how appearances can be deceptive – “I could be an angel or the devil in disguise”. The more controversial line “I could be the Nazi or I could be the Jew” aired in the Autumn 2000 tour was dropped for the final studio version although it appears on the Live At Ridge Farm version on the b-side to Getting Away With It (All Messed Up) and also on the song Discover on his debut solo album Bone.
The song was a feature in the second half of the 2011 orchestral tour and the 2023/4 tour and made very sporadic appearances in electric sets in between.
Details
That all visions are impure
The rising of the serpent
The apple in the fall
Don't trust the angels
May be devils in disguise
Don't trust the preacher
All his words don't make him wise
There are no promises that anyone can speak
The future's full of secrets
The past can never keep
Yes, I know I'm falling down
This incline is far too steep
Tell me when I hit the ground
You're too high for me to reach
We can weather uncharted oceans
Though the map reads
Lost at sea
When we break through
Or get broken
Will you stand here
Close to me
Close to me
You are the universe
And God knows I'm the fool
I've journeyed round the outer worlds
To return home to you
I've found a lover
Knows me better than myself
Sees through all my subtle lies
And touches me to health
We can weather uncharted oceans
Though the map reads
Lost at sea
When we break through
Or get broken
Will you stand here
Close to me
We can weather uncharted oceans
Though the map reads
Lost at sea
When we break through
Or get broken
Will you stand here
Close to me
Here comes the choices
It's consume or be consumed
Jump if you feel crazy
And jump if you're no fool

Song Structure:
Although I can't make out any audible guitar riffs, I've tabbed out the main
Piano Riff for the song so you can play along (hey, that rhymes!). Apart
from that the song's a straightforward G D Am C progression, barring the G C
D progression for the bits "yes I know I'm falling down." The G C D
progression features more prominently in the instrumental sections of the
Live At Ridge Farm version too.
