Review: David Brown @ Even The Stars
“Laid finishes the night with one final adrenaline fuelled head rush sending even those for whom eight new songs was an affront to their stuck in the past musical outlook. James are and always have been a band that live in the here and now, about creating unique experiences each night rather than the same tired repetitive rehearsed performance.”

Review: Natalie Royle @ Louder Than War
“Laid is the final song of the evening, and is the perfect choice for what has felt like a party for audience and band alike. Despite the huge venue, the whole show has had a really intimate feel, and the new songs sound right at home amongst, (and if not, dare I say it, even better than) the old faithfuls. I have watched this band A LOT over the years and I think this is the best I have ever heard them. If you get the opportunity to go and watch them over the summer, do it – you won’t be disappointed.”

“The gig showcased why James continues to be a seminal force in the music world.
Their blend of new material and classic hits created an electric atmosphere that resonated with both longtime fans and new listeners.
Tim Booth’s magnetic stage presence, coupled with the band’s impeccable musicianship, made for an unforgettable experience.”

Review: Rachel Smith @ Manchester Evening News
“There’s a certain irony in the opening request from a band famed for inspiring a generation to Sit Down on sticky dancefloors up and down the land, but from the first bars of Johnny Yen it was clear James’ performance at the Co-op Arena was going to be something special.”

Review: Shaun Curran @ iNews
“The sight of James in full flight really is something to behold. The Manchester veterans were six songs in to a magnificent show when trumpeter Andy Diagram, whose joyous coils of noise are key to lifting and enriching James, emerged within the crowd on the second tier near the back of the arena, swirling his instrument as the lengthy, trance-like “Sound” ascended to a dizzying peak. Back on the stage, inimitable leader Tim Booth was transfixed, as lost in the music as everyone else. That sort of thing – exuberant, unifying, musically adventurous mass connection– is difficult to get right. James have made a speciality of it.”

“This was a supremely confident and assured performance from James, ever changing the setlist, playing around with songs, looking for new connections both within and without the band, taking us all on their journey. It may have been a Tuesday night in Cardiff, not the sexiest location on a school night, but it was one of their best shows and audiences for a very long time.”

Review: David Brown @ Even The Stars
““There’s time for one more so make the most of it” Tim tells us which means we weren’t going to get either Sit Down or Laid. We do eventually get both but the former is stopped as a woman passes out as the song kicks back in after the audience have taken it from the band. The gig is stopped for a couple of minutes while help arrives and when it resumes they finish the song and Saul leads them straight into Laid that has everyone in the arena on their feet for one final time and Tim down on the barrier. They take their bows having both stuck to their guns with eight songs from Yummy and given the nostalgia heads their fill of favourites too.”

Review: Gareth John @ York Press
“Tonight, new releases hold their own against established favourites, all of them strong, fresh, and yet instantly recognisable as trademark James material. Booth explained that those who had done their homework and listened to Yummy in advance would have enjoyed the evening even more. No-one appeared to be complaining as the crowd lapped up the setlist as Booth declared and explained that the new songs would soon become the audience’s future favourites.”

Review: Mike Ainscoe @ At The Barrier
“The tour has seen some juggling in the set that allows for choice cuts from the catalogue to get filtered along with what turns out tonight to be a bold eight new songs. Yet, the hits are reserved for end of set and encore finales. The result is that the atmosphere and the bar gets raised to experience the communal James heights as the likes of Come Home (a constant reminder of the baggy Madchester days), Sometimes, Laid and inevitably, Sit Down, have Leeds to a man, woman and child submit to the James philosophy – one of which they sing in Tomorrow “You gotta keep faith that your luck/path etc will change.” Hallelujah to that!”

“Remaining relevant for 40 years is an achievement in itself, but James go from strength to strength and we all left the arena, singing our favourite songs, looking forward to next time.”

Review: Martin Unsworth @ Louder Than War
“Should you get the chance to catch James live – in whatever setting – take it. You might not get all the ‘hits’. This particular tour has been plagued by complaints from people wanting to hear that song, and accusing the band of being self-indulgent for not including it on the setlist. These people would not be missed if they didn’t show up, or buy a ticket. The people who ‘get it’ will still have a whale of a time, and be carried away with a unique, passionate and incredibly significant band who show no signs of becoming complacent. Just look at the smiles on the faces of the group as they leave the stage – it’s a perfect reflection of the crowd that’s enjoyed every second of their performance, but more importantly, it shows that they are still enjoying it too. Long may it continue…”

Review: Joseph Nozedar @ The Gryphon
“Even though you may say that guitar driven music and bands are no longer in fashion, 2024 has seen a renaissance in guitar-heavy music with many bands snatching the number one spot but having limited airtime. While it may be some time before the habits of certain radio stations change, the new material of constantly innovative bands like James must not go unnoticed.”

Review: With Just A Hint Of Mayhem
“Then it was time for “that song”, yes, the perennial anthem of the ages, “Sit Down” and clearly no one did sit down for it. We all sang along as loud as possible though. The song was stopped shortly before the end to help security and venue staff deal with a medical emergency in the crowd, with a compassionate and empathetic Tim Booth telling us what was happening. After they restarted most of the band sat on the front of the stage to listen to the crowd continue to sing this timeless tune. Booth then informed us that we were now on ‘Fergie Time’ which meant another song could be played. That song was “Laid”, perhaps my favourite James song. What a magnificent way to end an epic and dazzling set from a band that goes from strength to strength, even after all this time. I left Leeds an incredibly happy man after this show, I suspect everyone left with smiles on their faces. Roll on the next tour!”

Review: David Brown @ Even The Stars
“Often Glasgow gigs fail to live up the billing that the more vocal elements of the city’s music following place on them. Tonight though they proved that when the mood is right it’s one of the best places in the world to watch a gig. Even the parochial nonsense of “here we fucking go” that blights songs that it doesn’t even work with is thankfully absent. James captured the mood in the room perfectly last night with a setlist that both stood by their ethos that all their music has equal value whether written yesterday or forty years ago but sagely acknowledging the size of the venue and the crowd. One of their best gigs for many years.”

“After their electrifying performance, the band gracefully exited the stage, visibly elated and grateful for the enthusiastic reception from the Glasgow crowd. Every member seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves, waving and smiling at the audience. It was truly a spectacular night, leaving the audience in awe.”

Review: Alan Brown @ Bring The Noise
“The four-song encore began with Way Over Your Head, the last from Yummy, followed by Beautiful Beaches as the screens turned to orange emulate the subject matter of the song when people were running to the beaches in 2020 to escape the Californian wildfires. We were then taken back to 1990’s Gold Mother album for Come Home, the set finished with Laid, the title track from the 1993 album of the same name and by far the band’s biggest song and a great way to end the night. Having seen James play live around a dozen times since 1993 this performance was the best yet, like a fine wine this band only gets better with age! “

Stereoboard – Review: James - Yummy (Album Review)
24th April 2024 |Despite some similarities with earlier releases, James are no parody of their former selves. Instead, they have evolved into a more mature version. With the addition of Alper’s voice, there is a sustained feeling of being offered something new. As a result, ‘Yummy’ is without doubt the best album James have released since they reformed.

Northern Exposure – Review: JAMES PROVIDE POLITICAL POIGNANCE WITH THEIR MOST EXPERIMENTAL RECORD TO DATE – ‘YUMMY’
19th April 2024 |“Yummy” is an album that is perfect for all James fans, whether they’ve been around since the beginning or are only just finding their music now. The group provide opportunities to reflect with raw, observational anecdotes that can settle any uneasiness in a wide spectrum of scenarios and subjects. Merging many musical influences and styles gives the album a unique feel, yet still the same storytelling and picture painting principles that make James who they are.

The Mancunion – Review: James – Yummy: Mancunian legends shine on their 18th studio album
15th April 2024 |For a band who’ve been going for over 40 years, James have certainly aged gracefully, and there’s no enduring sign here that they’ll ever slow down. Sparse attempts at experimentation may be less innovative than they’d hoped, but it can’t be denied that the Manchester pioneers shine when sticking to what they know best. Within tracks on Yummy, James effectively develop their longevity, signature sound, and style. The results are quite delicious indeed.

All Music Magazine – Review: James - Yummy
14th April 2024 |There is no disguising the messages and warnings within this collection of songs, but it feels uplifting and brave, careful and deliberate and although the subject matter has touched all of us the foot tapping I still experienced when listening to these songs gave me hope and a wry smile I’m still wearing.

Music OMH – Review: Tim Booth and co’s 18th is an album for both fans and newcomers, and a triumph over prejudice and anxiety
14th April 2024 |Booth’s continued evolution as a vocalist is a key to James’ fiercely relevant songs, and their many lyrical takeaways. He is an honest songwriter – perhaps too much at times – but manages to express what a lot of his listeners feel whether they too are 63 or 36. By addressing personal struggles head on he can help raise the listener high with each affirmative chorus. With these many successes Yummy adds itself to the James canon as an album both for fans and newcomers, a triumph over prejudice and anxiety. Everyone is welcome here.

McGig Music – Review: Today sees the release of the new album ‘Yummy’ from James
12th April 2024 |With love engendered at the album’s core, Yummy then sets out to help us endure, often appreciate, life’s many dilemmas. Life’s A Fucking Miracle, which Tim considers “one of the most joyful songs we’ve written in years, it could be a queer dance anthem” argues that the most mundane fishbowl existence should be seized and celebrated; and Better With You, a celestial disco tune and apocalypse romance, suggests that even global Armageddon and the subsequent post-human regeneration of the planet would be beautiful to behold with the right person and a good view.

12th April 2024 |‘Yummy’ is an album which deals with several serious issues and is cheerful and musically uplifting at the same time. The lyrics are typical 2024 subjects which we can all relate to, but needs to be addressed by Tim Booth every now and then.

12th April 2024 |“I’ll avoid cliched use of the album’s title, as I am sure many other reviewers may well milk that to death. My closing thoughts borrow the title and chorus from the aforementioned James classic. “Oh sit down, Oh sit down, sit down next to me….” and have a listen to what’s currently playing loudly in the Morgan household, and then tell me this review is not accurate!”

The Boar – Review: James’ ‘Yummy’ showcases Tim Booth’s lyricism at its best
12th April 2024 |“From conspiracy theories to AI and the environment, Yummy is proof that James does not shy away from speculating on the most significant topics. Yummy is a traditional James album, littered with anthemic hits for the listener to sing along to, however, Alper’s vocals paired with the band’s creativity sonically lift the album, and makes it stand out amongst its predecessors. Booth’s introspective lyricism combined with his bandmates’ instrumentation makes for a stunning album.”

God Is In The TV – Review: James – Yummy (Nothing But Love Music)
10th April 2024 |With nine studio albums under their belt since they reunited in 2007, James are more prolific than ever and Yummy cements their place as one of the most comercially and aristically – and most loved – alternative bands of their era. Unafraid of the unknown, they continue soaring to new heights of beauty and inspiration and their refusal to conform to societies expectations as to what a band of their longitude should he doing is commendable.

Louder Than War – Review: James - Yummy
07th April 2024 |Yummy is the sound of a band refusing to rest on their laurels, in love with their creative process and looking forward rather than backwards. James still possess the ability to produce the anthems with which they made their name, and Yummy has moments where they hit that sweet spot, but across the twelve songs here they’re searching for deeper connections, both internally within the band and with their audience. Their expansion to a nine-piece has opened up new possibilities, particularly vocally with Alper on board, and that allows them to make a James record that sounds like a James record, but not like one they’ve made before.

Even The Stars – Review: James – Pudding
04th April 2024 |James have often talked up their songwriting process, the chaotic way in which jams are distilled over time into songs and Pudding gives us an insider view of that for the first time in three decades. Best listened to without any preconceptions and expectations, it’s like discovering a secret diary and scrap book of ideas. Without the death of proper release singles and accompanying b-sides many of these songs would have evolved into those and some may have displaced tracks from Yummy, but in 2024 Pudding tantalises and teases what these songs might have become whilst standing in their own right as a fascinating peep behind the curtains.

Rogue
Rogue is track nine on the 2024 album Yummy.
Details
Oh no I got old
I need a drink to spill my blackest ink
Still think that I am chasing 31
Beauty privilege wasted on the young
My friends
The leavings have begun
I've paid my dues to Caesar
Pray to be spared from Shiva
I've been a whore, a samurai, a guru
Burnt as a witch, worked for the church
A cockatoo
Think I'd be wise from all these lives
But maths won't help ya, maths won't help ya
I've been a monk, an alien, Habiru
I've been a punk, a saint, a fool, Vishnu
I've been killer
And now I'm a singer
Having a breakthrough
I'm about to go rogue
On a roll
I've taken off my clothes
I'm lying here I'm feeling so exposed
My body won't do tricks and flips with grace
My body won't behave
Try bulking up, I'm losing too much weight
My face, my face, my face is full of folds
I'm still mesmerised by cleavage
I won't come to Jesus
Lovers of life burn bright, super nova
If you’re judging us hard come back when yer older
Find you a song and sing from your bones
Dance till you drop
Forget you're being watched
Dance into your trauma
There's a key to each lock
From the belly of a whale
Out stepped Jonah
All I know
Know nothing is for certain
My curse was a blessing, the cure was a poison
I've been a whore, a samurai, a guru
Burnt as a witch, worked for the church, a cockatoo Think I'd be wise from all, all these lives
But maths won't help ya, maths won't help ya
I've been a monk, an alien, Habiru
I've been a cunt, a saint, a fool, Vishnu
I've been killer, now I'm a singer
Having a breakthrough I'm about to go rogue
On a roll
Where'd I put that where'd you gone song
Where'd I put that turn you on song
Think l'd be wise from all these lives
Some of us still got work to do
Where'd I put that where'd you gone song
Where'd I put that turn you on song
Think l'd be wise from all these lives
Some of us still got work to do
