Review: James Iles @ Redditch Standard
“James picked up the pace to headline the last night and close a brilliant weekend on the beautiful Ragley Hall estate.
The atmosphere exploded into life when they took to the stage with the effervescent frontman Tim Booth (now 62!) throwing shapes like he did in their late 80s/1990s heyday.
With an energy that defies his years and put us fortysomething dads to shame they did not disappoint.”

Review: David Brown @ Even The Stars
“Tim takes himself down to the audience, much to the initial shock of security, and lifts himself up on to the barrier, first during Born Of Frustration where he risks getting whacked on the head by an inflatable penis that’s held aloft near the front for most of the set and then during Getting Away With It (All Messed Up) where he dives headlong in to crowdsurf. He’s not carried as far back as he’d usually be but it’s accompanied by a huge roar as those further back see it on the big screen. Sit Down and Laid in particular have the crowd bouncing and as they finish with Sound and Andy stands aloft on the monitors as Dave and Debbie’s drums combination bring the song to a powerful finale, it feels like they’ve convinced much of the crowd that they’re a bit more than one of those bands their parents used to listen to and the two or three songs they might have known beforehand.”

Review: Scott Ancliffe @ Yorkshire Post
“Manchester-rockers James also had a standout set with enigmatic front man Tim Booth crowd surfing and climbing the barricade to serenade the fans. Classic hits Sit Down, Laid and Born of Frustration were all crowd pleasers.”

Sounds of the City event that marks the 30th anniversary of James’s legendary Alton Towers gig. The same set was played as at the Alton Towers show, albeit in true James fashion in a different order.
Review: Stuart Ralston @ Even The Stars
“Apparently the band were nervous about tonight’s show. However, they are having just as much fun up there as the audience and they delivered a remarkable show. There’s an incredible amount of energy on stage and perhaps it is worth the band revisiting this approach again. Bath Moles Club ‘88 anyone?”

Review: Del Pike @ Louder Than War
“The lovely guy next to me had to be reluctantly hoisted away by his wife before the end of the gig as his back had “gone”, which was poetic to a point. Many of tonight’s crowd were there at the original ’92 gig and time is a tricky traveller. MC Troy Hawke observed one fan sporting a bucket hat and a walking stick, but for most however, this was a time to remember when Tim Booth had a full head of hair, as did most of their fans and times seemed possibly simpler. It was noted during the gig by guitarist Saul Davies that the band members may get older but the songs never age.
A brilliant night under a clear Manchester sky. It’s safe to say they’ve earned that blue plaque.”

Review: Dianne Bourne @ Manchester Evening News
“There may not have been the fireworks finale and a theme park backdrop that Alton Towers delivered all those years ago, but James still gave us one hell of a rollercoaster ride. And made sure this night was another one for the band’s history books too.”

A warm-up show for Castlefield Bowl the following weekend with profits generated donated to War Child
Review: David Brown @ Even The Stars
“For a band forty years into their existence there’s an energy and passion that younger bands wish they could bottle. The interactions between them, many subtle and easily missed, add to the magic. Three of their very earliest songs – What’s The World, Hymn From A Village and Stutter show absolutely no signs of ageing. Saul Chloe, Andy and Debbie add magic and variety by constantly switching instruments that allows these songs to flourish and evolve and constantly challenge both the band and the audience. The vocals interaction between Tim and Chloe breathe new life into the likes of Lose Control and Gold Mother, which is preceded by an impassioned defence by Tim of women’s rights to choose exactly what they do with their bodies and that men have no right to dictate it.
There is absolutely nothing more magical than a gig by a band living in the moment and flying by the seat of their pants surrounded by wonderful beautiful people, some of who are friends, some complete strangers. Phone in pocket throughout, every next song a surprise, James gigs have always been unique and special, but even by their own standards there was something about this one that made it even more so“
