“The buzz in the room is electric as the lights go up. It’s rare for James to play a show this small these days, their June 2024 show is at the mammoth O2, 10 times the size of this. They make those arenas feel intimate, but tonight you could see the whites in their eyes, smell the intensity of the performance and revel in the fact that it could all coming crashing down in an instant. The song choice might have been more straight-forward than usual, but this band is all about the delivery of them. And that was as unpredictably unpredictable as ever.”

Review: David Brown @ Even The Stars

“Sit Down is taken away from the band by the crowd and made their own and if Tim hadn’t stopped them they’d probably still be singing it now. It can be a cliche with audience singalongs but not when it’s this spontaneous. As if almost to prove a point the crowd don’t pick up Sometimes at the end so it comes to a slightly abrupt stop. It probably affords them an extra song as they quickly decide to ditch the encore ritual and finish with Come Home and Getting Away With It (All Messed Up), chosen off the hoof from a list of possibilities that means there’s a few moans about the exclusion of Laid. But this is James, you don’t get everything you expect or want every time, but you are pretty much guaranteed a joyous occasion, plenty of unique moments and a band that is thriving now as a unit more than they’ve ever done, reviving old songs and giving them new life and magic, throwing in the odd curveballs and never neglecting their most recent work.”

Review: David Brown @ Even The Stars

“Tim takes himself down to the audience, much to the initial shock of security, and lifts himself up on to the barrier, first during Born Of Frustration where he risks getting whacked on the head by an inflatable penis that’s held aloft near the front for most of the set and then during Getting Away With It (All Messed Up) where he dives headlong in to crowdsurf. He’s not carried as far back as he’d usually be but it’s accompanied by a huge roar as those further back see it on the big screen. Sit Down and Laid in particular have the crowd bouncing and as they finish with Sound and Andy stands aloft on the monitors as Dave and Debbie’s drums combination bring the song to a powerful finale, it feels like they’ve convinced much of the crowd that they’re a bit more than one of those bands their parents used to listen to and the two or three songs they might have known beforehand.”

“James are a band best experienced when you leave your expectations at the door and the real lack of them and the go with the flow mentality of the Portuguese really makes the shows out here a special event. There’s no mass exodus to the bar or toilets when they deign to play a song off their latest hit record, and James still have them despite what many believe, no shouts for a particular song, no evening ruined because they didn’t play X and Y. It’s very much about the love of the music, an appreciation of how it brings people together and the fact that we, and they, are here at all. Connections are more important than ever in the post-COVID world and nights like this provide a reminder of the good things that we missed out on when everything went dark.”

Review: David Brown @ Even The Stars

“It’s past the midnight curfew by the time band finish (although there’s no need to rush for last minute transport here unlike back home when the world stops around eleven o’clock) with a rousing combination of Ring The Bells that has the whole place up on their feet and bouncing and a slightly subdued in comparison Laid. The look on the band’s faces as they take a lingering au revoir from the crowd very much confirms a very special and mutual bond of true love between James and their Portuguese crowd, borne of appreciation on one side by the fact the band treat here like their second home and play where others don’t venture this far west across the Iberian peninsula, on the other by the audience’s willingness to take the band for what and who they are, coming with open hearts and minds and not arriving with expectations of this song or that song being in the set and having their night ruined by their absence. It’s a perfect and beautiful symbiotic love affair.”
