“For a band forty years into their existence there’s an energy and passion that younger bands wish they could bottle. The interactions between them, many subtle and easily missed, add to the magic. Three of their very earliest songs – What’s The World, Hymn From A Village and Stutter show absolutely no signs of ageing. Saul Chloe, Andy and Debbie add magic and variety by constantly switching instruments that allows these songs to flourish and evolve and constantly challenge both the band and the audience. The vocals interaction between Tim and Chloe breathe new life into the likes of Lose Control and Gold Mother, which is preceded by an impassioned defence by Tim of women’s rights to choose exactly what they do with their bodies and that men have no right to dictate it.

There is absolutely nothing more magical than a gig by a band living in the moment and flying by the seat of their pants surrounded by wonderful beautiful people, some of who are friends, some complete strangers. Phone in pocket throughout, every next song a surprise, James gigs have always been unique and special, but even by their own standards there was something about this one that made it even more so“

The 4 day weekend of events at Kenwood House was postponed by the promoter from August 2021 and rescheduled to June 2022 with a revised line-up. Disappointingly for the attendees and bands, the stage build-out was delayed, so The Sherlocks, Cruel Hearts Club and Shine On DJ were cut.

“…James have to keep these [1990 era] songs fresh to survive so the likes of Say Something, Ring The Bells and Come Home are given new life by the nine-piece. Best of all is Lose Control … with Chloe starting it on lead vocals and it referencing the original extended version with the ‘we have found the love to carry on’ ending rather than the curtailed single edit, it’s a wonderful encapsulation of how this band has to evolve to survive. Live A Love Of Life, last played before this year back in 1994, feels even more relevant and apt than it did on release in 1992 and this iteration of James make it their own.”

“The encore begins with Beautiful Beaches, an Arcade Fire-esque indie rock crowd-pleaser, from their impressive 2021 record, All the Colours of You. It really is one of many signs that James are still making music that matters. The show comes to an end with a profoundly moving, life-affirming performance of the poetic Sometimes. As the acoustic chord progression goes on, lyrics resound, loud: “Sometimes when I look deep in your eyes I can see your soul.””

“It soon came off as he surfed the crowd and shared the love during a set that left out several best known hits but still got fans singing along to Come Home, Sometimes, Say Something, and of course James’ anthem for the dispossessed, Sit Down. A mid-set tempo dip for lesser known tracks was bolstered by a band and backing singers on top form with a thumbs up for the title track to latest album All The Colours of You.”

“James are a band best experienced when you leave your expectations at the door and the real lack of them and the go with the flow mentality of the Portuguese really makes the shows out here a special event. There’s no mass exodus to the bar or toilets when they deign to play a song off their latest hit record, and James still have them despite what many believe, no shouts for a particular song, no evening ruined because they didn’t play X and Y. It’s very much about the love of the music, an appreciation of how it brings people together and the fact that we, and they, are here at all. Connections are more important than ever in the post-COVID world and nights like this provide a reminder of the good things that we missed out on when everything went dark.”

Review: David Brown @ Even The Stars

“It’s past the midnight curfew by the time band finish (although there’s no need to rush for last minute transport here unlike back home when the world stops around eleven o’clock) with a rousing combination of Ring The Bells that has the whole place up on their feet and bouncing and a slightly subdued in comparison Laid. The look on the band’s faces as they take a lingering au revoir from the crowd very much confirms a very special and mutual bond of true love between James and their Portuguese crowd, borne of appreciation on one side by the fact the band treat here like their second home and play where others don’t venture this far west across the Iberian peninsula, on the other by the audience’s willingness to take the band for what and who they are, coming with open hearts and minds and not arriving with expectations of this song or that song being in the set and having their night ruined by their absence. It’s a perfect and beautiful symbiotic love affair.”

Review: Andrew Perry @ Daily Telegraph

Sporting a fake-fur coat, billowing yoga trousers and the kind of voluminous woolly hat that rastafarians store their dreadlocks in, Booth bulldozed through by sheer force of character, dancing as if electrocuted, and frequently orating between numbers.

Approaching 11pm, the band’s early-90s gems finally materialised, with Come Home, a cathartic venting of frustration, and Sit Down, a freaks-united anthem whose unifying message felt doubly meaningful, mid-pandemic. As their show rambled into its third hour, James’s feelgood factor kept on coming, with rare engagement and depth.

Booth’s stamina is laudable, throwing his wiry frame and loose clothes into extended dance moves where he looks to be breaking free of his own body. The band’s attempts to reach the back of the arena with their sound are successful, the bigger space giving us the chance to appreciate the band members more.

Review: Scientists of Sound

For anyone who’s been fortunate enough to see James before will know all too well no performance would be complete without booth’s convulsive dancing and tonight the crowd got plenty to feast their eyes upon as he jolted around with arms and hands flailing.

Eternally grateful for the crowds adoration, Tim’s reaction throughout is earnest. It’s clear to see the appreciation the band have for their fans, reciprocated in huge cheers and smiles throughout as they churned out 2 hours of live music.
