Review: David Brown @ EvenTheStars.co.uk
“Gigs in the rain can be magical and special and tonight’s very much felt like that. The band reacted to the situation when they came back on stage and the audience just let go of any inhibitions determined to have the best time and to make the night unique despite the drenching they got. The Piece Hall gave James and their fans two very different nights and experiences, but ones that will last long in the memory – it’s been thirty-four years since the band last played in this magnificent square, hopefully it won’t be anywhere near as long before their next visit.”

Review: Sarah Fitton @ Halifax Courier
“The show had to be paused for around 20 minutes to wait for lightning to pass but even with the heavy rain, the audience were singing along in full voice.”

Review: Laura Dean @ God Is In The TV Zine
“Stronger and more salient than ever, James remain to be one of the best live bands around. Their second night in the beautiful surroundings of the Piece Hall was a clear insight into not just the magic that they produce as a nine piece, but how much fun they’re having whilst they do it.”

“The band are on good form throughout, Tim spinning Andy round on his chair during Sit Down and changing a line in Waltzing Along to reference Andy’s broken foot. Saul tells us he looks like a sinister accountant before Interrogation. The interactions between the band seem to drive them on, Debbie in particular being a driving force particularly away from her drum kit. Life does, it seem, begin at forty.”

Review: Adam Smith @ Express And Star
“Tim Booth is still a fantastic front man, his voice and hips still move like the 1980s, and Andy Diagram’s still playing a trumpet in a dress, they all seemed to be having fun on stage, perhaps they were cutting loose without an orchestra behind them demanding every note being perfect.”

Review: James Iles @ Redditch Standard
“James picked up the pace to headline the last night and close a brilliant weekend on the beautiful Ragley Hall estate.
The atmosphere exploded into life when they took to the stage with the effervescent frontman Tim Booth (now 62!) throwing shapes like he did in their late 80s/1990s heyday.
With an energy that defies his years and put us fortysomething dads to shame they did not disappoint.”

Review: David Brown @ Even The Stars
“James are a band best experienced when you leave your expectations at the door and the real lack of them and the go with the flow mentality of the Portuguese really makes the shows out here a special event. There’s no mass exodus to the bar or toilets when they deign to play a song off their latest hit record, and James still have them despite what many believe, no shouts for a particular song, no evening ruined because they didn’t play X and Y. It’s very much about the love of the music, an appreciation of how it brings people together and the fact that we, and they, are here at all. Connections are more important than ever in the post-COVID world and nights like this provide a reminder of the good things that we missed out on when everything went dark.”

Review: David Brown @ Even The Stars
“It’s past the midnight curfew by the time band finish (although there’s no need to rush for last minute transport here unlike back home when the world stops around eleven o’clock) with a rousing combination of Ring The Bells that has the whole place up on their feet and bouncing and a slightly subdued in comparison Laid. The look on the band’s faces as they take a lingering au revoir from the crowd very much confirms a very special and mutual bond of true love between James and their Portuguese crowd, borne of appreciation on one side by the fact the band treat here like their second home and play where others don’t venture this far west across the Iberian peninsula, on the other by the audience’s willingness to take the band for what and who they are, coming with open hearts and minds and not arriving with expectations of this song or that song being in the set and having their night ruined by their absence. It’s a perfect and beautiful symbiotic love affair.”
