The 4 day weekend of events at Kenwood House was postponed by the promoter from August 2021 and rescheduled to June 2022 with a revised line-up. Disappointingly for the attendees and bands, the stage build-out was delayed, so The Sherlocks, Cruel Hearts Club and Shine On DJ were cut.
Review: David Brown @ EvenTheStars.co.uk
“…James have to keep these [1990 era] songs fresh to survive so the likes of Say Something, Ring The Bells and Come Home are given new life by the nine-piece. Best of all is Lose Control … with Chloe starting it on lead vocals and it referencing the original extended version with the ‘we have found the love to carry on’ ending rather than the curtailed single edit, it’s a wonderful encapsulation of how this band has to evolve to survive. Live A Love Of Life, last played before this year back in 1994, feels even more relevant and apt than it did on release in 1992 and this iteration of James make it their own.”

Review: Filippo L’Astorino @ The Upcoming
“The encore begins with Beautiful Beaches, an Arcade Fire-esque indie rock crowd-pleaser, from their impressive 2021 record, All the Colours of You. It really is one of many signs that James are still making music that matters. The show comes to an end with a profoundly moving, life-affirming performance of the poetic Sometimes. As the acoustic chord progression goes on, lyrics resound, loud: “Sometimes when I look deep in your eyes I can see your soul.””

Review: Bridget Galton @ Ham & High
“It soon came off as he surfed the crowd and shared the love during a set that left out several best known hits but still got fans singing along to Come Home, Sometimes, Say Something, and of course James’ anthem for the dispossessed, Sit Down. A mid-set tempo dip for lesser known tracks was bolstered by a band and backing singers on top form with a thumbs up for the title track to latest album All The Colours of You.”

Review: Dave Simpson @ The Guardian
It works because newer songs such as climate change anthem Beautiful Beaches more than live with the old and Booth is such a livewire, charismatic performer. In full flow – hyperactively shake-dancing, beatifically grinning, at one point using a megaphone to shamanically shout to the spirits – the 61-year-old seems to transcend global worries to reach a highly engaging enlightened contentment. The singer’s smile widens at the arena-sized wave of clapping that greets 2001’s sublime Getting Away With It (All Messed Up) and the band finally unleash whoppers Sound, Laid and the perennial Sit Down, during which the band sit down and seated audience members stand up. The hits bring crowd euphoria, but James are still on a quest for humanity’s deeper truths.

Review: Andy Houghton @ Metal Planet Music
By the time we reach the encores, the audience is buzzing. ‘Wherever It Takes Us’ is followed by classics ‘Sit Down’ and ‘Laid’, which just had to be part of the bill. Even in the absence of Tim’s stage-diving – Covid has put paid to that for now – the band felt deeply engaged with the crowd, and the event was thrilling. Live music doesn’t come much better than this.

A setlist to that jumps around the back catalogue without ever feeling disjointed. The reason is the way James infuse their older songs with the vibrancy of the new and perform them as if they’ve just been written.

“You asked (okay – pleaded, pestered, perhaps even profaned) and finally we’ve delivered: a new live double album and DVD! Including a beautiful photo-book set, as well as coloured vinyl, deluxe double CD, signed prints (get in early!), t-shirts, the full works.
“As requested by many lovers of the band – a live DVD and album to capture the spirit of the gigs of the last few years. Hopefully this will help us through the long nights of lockdown – reliving these gatherings of intimacy and passion. Thank you for coming along for the ride in the crazy world of James.” – Tim
In a year feeling anything but ordinary, this special collection reminds us of the power and connection of live music.
Released just in time for St. Nick to get his hands on it for you…11th December 2020. Sorry we can’t put on one of our traditional winter tours to warm your quarantined cockles but hopefully this is the next best thing.”
Even The Stars – Review: James - Live in Extraordinary Times
14th December 2020 |Live In Extraordinary Times is a beautifully presented package that has clearly been a labour of love for a band that is fiercely proud of their live performances. It’s in the flesh that they come alive and dismiss all the lazy perceptions of them as a band. The choice of songs here alone does that. Whilst it’s almost impossible to recreate the thrill of a live concert on a shiny disc, this DVD captures a band at the peak of its power – as their Come Home Live video did back in 1990. The Philadelphia concert is the most powerful visual representation of the band they’ve ever released. It’s an absolutely essential document to understand one of the country’s most misunderstood and underappreciated bands in their most natural environment.

Saul Davies: “We actually miss a lot of important cultural information because there’s so much flying around, you know what I mean? I suddenly discovered The Cure have released an album last year and they’re one of my favourite bands and I didn’t even know they’d done it.”

Review: EvenTheStars.co.uk
Sometimes the best gigs can take place in the strangest surroundings. Five o’clock in the evening, in bright sunshine, on a stage at a racecourse with a mix of die-hard fans and those out for a drunken day at the races and a huge gap and fences between band and audience weren’t auspicious, but somehow James turned their Doncaster racecourse show into a triumph.
