Review: David Brown @ Even The Stars
“Often Glasgow gigs fail to live up the billing that the more vocal elements of the city’s music following place on them. Tonight though they proved that when the mood is right it’s one of the best places in the world to watch a gig. Even the parochial nonsense of “here we fucking go” that blights songs that it doesn’t even work with is thankfully absent. James captured the mood in the room perfectly last night with a setlist that both stood by their ethos that all their music has equal value whether written yesterday or forty years ago but sagely acknowledging the size of the venue and the crowd. One of their best gigs for many years.”

“After their electrifying performance, the band gracefully exited the stage, visibly elated and grateful for the enthusiastic reception from the Glasgow crowd. Every member seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves, waving and smiling at the audience. It was truly a spectacular night, leaving the audience in awe.”

Review: Alan Brown @ Bring The Noise
“The four-song encore began with Way Over Your Head, the last from Yummy, followed by Beautiful Beaches as the screens turned to orange emulate the subject matter of the song when people were running to the beaches in 2020 to escape the Californian wildfires. We were then taken back to 1990’s Gold Mother album for Come Home, the set finished with Laid, the title track from the 1993 album of the same name and by far the band’s biggest song and a great way to end the night. Having seen James play live around a dozen times since 1993 this performance was the best yet, like a fine wine this band only gets better with age! “

“The encore is as defiant as the set. Way Over Your Head is simply stunning, one of the album highlights transformed into a touching torchlight song that captures the despair of the first half of the song and then explodes into positivity as the second half lifts the song’s subject out of the hole they found themselves in to the accompaniment of multi-coloured butterflies flying around the screens. Beautiful Beaches, a hit single born in the wrong time but one which the band clearly love, ends with Debbie and Dave once again duelling drums whilst the band turn and watch them. They send the crowd out into the night with Laid, their only predictable move of the night, played straight fast and furious.”

Review: David Brown @ Even The Stars
“Sit Down is taken away from the band by the crowd and made their own and if Tim hadn’t stopped them they’d probably still be singing it now. It can be a cliche with audience singalongs but not when it’s this spontaneous. As if almost to prove a point the crowd don’t pick up Sometimes at the end so it comes to a slightly abrupt stop. It probably affords them an extra song as they quickly decide to ditch the encore ritual and finish with Come Home and Getting Away With It (All Messed Up), chosen off the hoof from a list of possibilities that means there’s a few moans about the exclusion of Laid. But this is James, you don’t get everything you expect or want every time, but you are pretty much guaranteed a joyous occasion, plenty of unique moments and a band that is thriving now as a unit more than they’ve ever done, reviving old songs and giving them new life and magic, throwing in the odd curveballs and never neglecting their most recent work.”

“A light appears up on the balcony, but as Andy plays his first note, Tim asks him to “hold that trumpet” before commenting how weird it is to get to Glasgow and play on a Monday night to a seated crowd rather than the usual chaos. He notes the two security sat at the front of the stage and says they’ll be moved for the second half, but how beautifully quiet it is and how it makes them play better. Andy fashions to play again and then Saul jokes that maybe the audience thinks they’re shit. Whilst Andy gets impatient and tries again, Tim tells us 500 people got kicked out of their last Glasgow gig at the Hydro. When Hymn From A Village finally starts, it’s fast and frenetic and a few very old school heads stand up and dance to the James that they first fell in love with. It finishes with Debbie on the drums standing up as the song accelerates to its conclusion.”

“Closing the show with a clearly impromptu live debut of the newly orchestrated Getting Away With It (All Messed Up), James has the entire venue on its feet and belting out every word. A truly unforgettable night.”

“The Lake is simply stunning, a woman behind us comments that she’d watch a gig of that song being played over and over and over again and nothing else. The poignancy of the original, hidden away on a b-side of the Laid single, still underpins it but the stings, brass and the gospel vocals elevate it to a different plain completely. It’s a million miles from the 90s hit machine side of the band that grants them the commercial power to do this type of thing in 2023, but it’s the true essence of this band and one that is quite often easily overlooked by fools.”

Review: Chris Mackinnon at Edinburgh Evening News
They’re not fans of the outdoor gig sound limiters, tonight lamenting that they have to alternate slow, quiet songs with their more raucous outings and also advising the crowd that they’re not allowed to sing along. Best of luck with that.

Then the problems start. Jim’s bass is knackered and no amount of trying to fix it seems to work initially. Jim tells a few jokes to try and amuse us, the audience sing “Getting away with it” whilst they decide what to do. Saul suggests “an acoustic version of something and you’re not allowed to sing, let’s see what happens” as they strike up into Sit Down. It’s not immediately clear it is their best known song until Tim starts to sing and then everyone is joined in unison and one voice, with two fingers cocked to the decibel counters, apart from when the lyrics are changed to the original Rough Trade version mid-way through.

“The encore might be one of the worst kept secrets of the night as a curtain is pulled back to reveal the Love Music Community Choir who recently posted a video of How Hard The Day from Living In Extraordinary Times online and were invited by the band to perform with them. It’s How Hard The Day that starts the encore, the song lifted in the chorus by several dozen voices that transform the impact of the song’s chorus.”

“‘This is one of the first songs we ever wrote’ is the introduction for Stutter, a song that’s evolved from a spindly delicate song into a huge sprawling beast, that feels somehow apt amongst all these percussion-heavy new songs. As strobes flash and Tim loses himself in the music, it feels like there’s a million drums banging out the primal beat.”

“A HOPELESS romantic reveller popped the question to his girlfriend in front of euphoric crowds during last night’s headline act at Party at the Palace. Besotted Scott Carter, 27 pinched the microphone from Manchester outfit James before getting down on one knee and proposing to stunned Kelly Williams.”
