Update 13.12.09
James headlined the Manchester versus Cancer gig at the Manchester Evening News Arena last night. Backed by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, they played Getting Away With It (All Messed Up), Waltzing Along, Fairground, Just Like Fred Astaire, Of Monsters And Heroes And Men, Say Something, Don’t Wait That Long, She’s A Star, Hymn From A Village, Laid and were then joined by Peter Hook for covers of Joy Division classics Transmission and Atmosphere, with ex Happy Mondays vocalist Rowetta also joining for the latter. A review can be found here.
James have also issued a statement regarding, mainly anonymous, claims by posters on the official messageboard complaining about transaction prices for the upcoming Mirrorball tour.
“Hello Everyone,
We’ve noted the comments made on the board about the ticket pre-sale and the album pre-order and just want to clarify a few points.
As a band, we’ve decided we want to invest more in our website and offer more to fans. In order to do this we need to offer things to sell via the site. A company called Sandbag look after these transactions for us. They are a small, but reputable company who also work with Radiohead and REM amongst others.
Regarding the ticket pre-sale, the allocation we secured for fans who are on the mailing list were the best seats we were able to secure from the promoter of our shows. Some of these are standing, some are seated. We put these on sale in advance of general release so that those of you who are on the mailing list get first choice.
The price of the tickets is the same as any other ticketing agent, and the service charge that is applied is the same as any other agent. The only difference in price is the postage. Tickets bought through our ticket store are sent Royal Mail Special Delivery, and neither ourselves nor Sandbag make any profit from the Royal Mail charge. The reason for using Special Delivery is that sometimes tickets are sent to fans shortly before the event (for reasons outside of our control and Sandbag’s control); or sometimes tickets are lost in the post or delayed. Ticketmaster charge £2.25 for “Standard Post” which they admit is “non-secure”. We appreciate Special Delivery is a few pounds more but we would not want a loyal fan to miss a show because they bought tickets from our store which then did not arrive.
Regarding the album pre-order, the price should be £4.99 and the postage & packing fee, within the UK, is an additional £2. We appreciate that other online stores such as Amazon offer low prices and in many cases free postage and packing, but our store is very much a cottage industry and neither ourselves nor Sandbag have the size and resource to match the same prices as Amazon. We have asked that prices be as low as possible and we have asked that all fans who buy from our store receive great service and, where possible, exclusives that are not available anywhere else.
To ensure that all of you who buy through our store receive excellent service, we have asked that there be a dedicated email address specifically for our fans. If any of you have any questions or queries specifically regarding your order whether that is for a ticket or the mini-album, you are welcome to email jamestickets@sandbag.uk.com. You will receive a personal response from a real human being who will help you with your query.
Hope this clears things up and thank you for your support!
Best,
James HQ”

Update 19.9.09
Larry Gott is doing a charity skydive on October 1 for Disability Snowsport UK. He left the following message on the official James board :
“Hello you lovely lot, the new tracks are coming along nicely and we are all beavering away in our respective workstations (how hi-tech are we?) laying down our parts for lee to incorporate into the backing tracks we have already recorded.
I personally will be sneaking off for a day because on the 1st oct im going to be leaping out of a plane strapped to a Red Devil and hoping to raise some money for Disability Snowsport UK whilst im at it ( http://www.disabilitysnowsport.org.uk/ ).
I know its short notice but Im standing in for someone who has pulled out and i would like to ask you all for your help in achieving my target in this short period. It would be lovely if you left a message along with any donation ( large or small 🙂 ) at http://www.justgiving.com/larrygott/, then i can name check you personally when i post my thanks afterwards.
Why the hell am i doing this?
Well I’ve always wanted to skydive and now the opportunity has arisen for me to raise money for an amazing cause as well as tick off another ‘bucket list’ entry. Fear not dear friends, your generosity will ALL go to the charity as im funding the cost of the jump myself.
So why this charity?
The other day i had the honour of meeting some of the UK paralympic ski team and their stories were both fascinating and inspiring. One comment above all stuck in my mind :
“the first time i went up the mountain on the chairlift, I looked back at the wheelchair I had left behind and realised that i was leaving my disability behind with it. Skiing restores my freedom, independence and most of all, my ABILITY!”
I know i take my mobility for granted and i know what a shock it would be to have it taken from me. The magic of snowsports lies in its ability to restore mobility to those who have lost it, and grant it to those who have never experienced it.
Those of you who have enjoyed the thrill of snowsports can, im sure, imagine how the slopes enable a wheelchair user for example, to experience an amazing freedom and sense of grace absent in their normal lives.
I only have 2 weeks before the jump, so if you can, please visit http://www.justgiving.com/larrygott/ soon and click on donate. It doesn’t matter how small the donation, every little bit helps. And if you fancy letting the nice folks over on OOTT/egoiste etc know about this then i would be extremely grateful.
Cheers.
