Sinead O’Connor on ‘Just Like Fred Astaire’ B-side
14-Sep-99: One of the B-sides from the upcoming single, ‘Just Like Fred Astaire’, will be an “amazing” duet with Sinead O’Connor. According to Tim, the track should have been on the album, and could very easily stand up on its own as a single. Apparently, the band have made a concerted effort to provide quality B-sides for the ‘Millionaires’ singles, as a result of criticism over the past couple yearsfrom people who felt they were being ripped off by being charged for singles with re-releases and remixes as the B-sides. ‘Just like Fred Astaire’ will be released in two parts on 4th October in the UK. The track listing is as follows:
CD 1: 1.Just Like Fred Astaire, I Defeat, Long To See
CD 2: Just Like Fred Astaire (with video), Mary, Goal Goal Goal

Other stations playing the single which broadcast on the web are London’s Xfm and, believe it or not, Santa Monica, California’s KCRW. DJ Nic Harcourt has been playing it on his show, Morning Becomes Eclectic, which is on the air weekdays from 9am to noon and broadcast live on the ‘net and again from 4-7pm and 2-5am local time.

James Set at Lizard Not Included in Web Cast
11-Aug-99: James set at the Lizard Eclipse Festival was not included in the Lizard web cast yesterday due to objections from their label, Mercury Records. Apparently, Mercury refused to grant Lizard permission to broadcast James’ performance via the internet. Here is the response given when people wrote to Lizard to complain about James set not being shown, despite the fact that it was listed on the schedule:
Unfortunately the record label for James refused permission to broadcast their performance live on the Internet, they gave us no reasons, and did not care about the fans and the publicity involved. We were very disappointed but we did everything we could to try and broadcast them, I am very sorry if this caused you disappointment, I’m sure that other fans were also disappointed with the record label’s decision.
Lizard Eclipse Web Cast Reminder
15-Jun-99, updated 10-Aug-99: James will be headlining the main stage at the Lizard Eclipse Festival, being held at Goonhilly Downs, Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall, on Tuesday, 10 August. James Impress at Blackpool and Guildford
29-Jul-99, updated 07-Aug-99: James played a spectacular sold out show at the Tower Ballroom in Blackpool last Friday night, where they delighted the crowd by playing all the hits plus a handful of songs off the new album, including the current single ‘I Know What I’m Here For’, complete with three PVC-clad dancers crowding the stage, and the forthcoming single, ‘Feel Like Fred Astaire’. Other new songs included ‘Crash’, ‘Someone’s Got It In For Me’, and ‘If Anybody Hurts You’, all of which sounded brilliant and garnered a great reaction from the crowd.
The band made a grand entrance, as Mark rose up through the floor of the stage playing the opening strains of ‘Laid’ on the Ballroom’s famous Wurlitzer organ, and the set continued to build as the band moved effortlessly from the old favorites to the new tracks off ‘Millionaires’. They capped of the show with a rousing rendition of ‘Sit Down’, puncuated by a shower of balloons and confetti falling from the rafters. Afterwards, even the band agreed that the show was one of the best, if not the very best, they’d ever played.
The support band for the night were Manchester band ‘Exit 52’, who are made up of two of Jim’s brothers — Dave Glennie on lead vocals and Pete Glennie on lead guitar. Find out more about them at their web site: http://www.wirespider.demon.co.uk/.
Earlier in the afternoon the band held an record signing at the Virgin Megastore in Blackpool, where they spent nearly two hours signing autographs, chatting with fans, and posing for pictures. The band arrived in a custom detailed ‘James’ Roll Royce, pictured to the right.
James continued their successful weekend with a fantastic headlining set at the Guildford Festival on Saturday night, where they again played a near flawless set, again impressing the crowd with well-known favorites and the same selection of new songs as was played in Blackpool. They topped off the night off with an extended version of ‘Sit Down’, during which, at Saul’s direction, the entire crowd sat down.
Perhaps the only disapointment of the weekend came on Sunday night, when the official UK singles charts were announced, with James current single, ‘I Know What I’m Here For’, topping out at a disapointing number 22, despite a tremendous amount of airplay over the past few weeks. The single plummeted to number 39 in its second week on the charts.
Next Single Due in September, ‘Millionaires’ by October 4th
29-Jul-99: James next single, ‘Just Like Fred Astaire’, is tentatively scheduled for release on September 27th. The single, previously known simply as ‘Fred Astaire’, garnered the band quite a bit of coverage in the press recently when it was revealed that the estate of Hollywood legend Fred Astaire was threatening to sue the band if they did not change the title. The band had originally approached the estate seeking permission to use footage of the legendary entertainer in the video for the single, only to be threatened with legal action if they released the song with the original title.
New Album, ‘Millionaires’, Set for October Release
29-Jun-99, updated 29-Jul-99: James’ new album, ‘Millionaires’ is tentaively scheduled for release on October 11th and features contributions from Sinead O’Connor, who lends vocals on ‘Vervacous’, and Faithless, who produced the song ‘Afro Lover’. The album itself was produced in part by Brian Eno, with Steve Osborne, Ben Fenner, and Dave Bascombe also filling various production roles. It has already been voted number 1 new album by Music Week, a British trade paper, and is being widely acclaimed as the band’s best album to date.
James’ Status in the US
27-Jul-99: Numerous people have been asking about the US release date for the new singles and album, and unfortunately, the bad news is that James were dropped by the US arm of Mercury following the North American release of the Best Of, and currently do not have a record deal in the US. As a result, there is no US release date scheduled for either the singles or the new album at this time. However, the band are in the process of trying to re-negotiate a deal with Mercury or to find another label that would be willing to sign them to a US contract. More information on James’ status in the US will be posted here as it becomes available.

New Album Release Delayed
10-Mar-99, updated 11-Apr-99: The release of James’ new album has been pushed back until September, and possibly even later. The latest delay is due in part to producer/mixer Chris Potter’s decision to work on Richard Ashcroft’s new solo album instead. The album is currently slated for a September release, but that will depend on who is chosen to replace Potter, and what their schedule is. Two singles are tentatively planned for release prior to the album, the first sometime in May/June, and the second around July, though no release dates have been set as yet.
It is likely that James’ only UK festival appearance this summer will be at T in the Park, in Balado, Scotland, where they will be third on the bill on Sunday, July 11th. The band have decided to concentrate on playing more European festivals this summer, instead of the usual UK ones, since they played most of them last summer, and prefer to wait until after they’ve got a new album out before playing them again. They hope to introduce a few more new songs into the set list at the European festivals, which will form the basis for another tentative UK tour in December.
New Album & Single News
11-Apr-99: James next album is being mixed this week and is still on schedule for a September release. Most of the mixing will be done by Dave Bascombe, who mixed the 1990 release of Sit Down, and has worked with bands such as Depeche Mode, Erasure, Lightning Seeds, Suede, and Placebo, just to name a few. Saul and Mark will be mixing the rest with Ben Fenner, who mixed most of Laid and has worked with the likes of David Bowie, Laurie Anderson, and The Cranberries. The first single will be released to radio at the end of May, with release to the public coming at the end of June. The second single will come out roughly a month or so after that. Which songs will be released as singles won’t be decided until after mixing is completed.
